KevinMD and Less is More: Healthcare author Shannon Brownlee has kicked up a storm of late with her satirical poster comparing the overuse of angioplasties with the use of leeches in this completely hilarious poster.
As Kevin MD says “Over the top? Of course it is — it’s satire! And like all good satire, it contains a few grains of truth mixed with a hefty dose of exaggeration.”
Her accompanying article, featured on KevinMd, explores the need for decision aids to help patients make informed decisions about whether to get angioplasties and stents. She cites studies including the 2007 COURAGE trial that forced cardiologists to rethink their assumptions about the effectiveness of PCI.

Our Take: As our recent webinar series on Shared Decision-Making attests, we here at Engaging the Patient think patients need a lot more involvement in medical choices like the one discussed here. Indeed, Brownlee quotes a number of studies that were featured in our webinar series. (Warning: unavoidable reference to our product coming.) Further, she even makes a reference to “web-based interactive programs” that sound a lot like what we do at Emmi Solutions.
